Parent unit or Wi-Fi? This is how to choose a baby monitor

4. 9. 2026

Your baby is sleeping upstairs in the nursery, and you want a little time for yourself in the garden. Or at least on the balcony, with a coffee you can finish while it’s still hot. A good baby monitor will let you do that - but only if you choose one based on the right specifications. A baby monitor can do the same for a dog that doesn’t like being left home alone. We’ll show you the difference between a monitor with a parent unit and a Wi-Fi monitor, and explain what really matters when choosing one.

  • Want monitoring that doesn't depend on the internet? Choose a baby monitor with a parent unit. Want to see your baby from work or your grandparents' house? Go for a Wi-Fi model with an app.
  • The range stated on the box applies in an open field. Indoors, reinforced concrete, metal structures and the microwave in your kitchen will all reduce it.
  • First, focus on microphone sensitivity and night vision. Lullabies and smart alerts are a bonus, not a deciding factor.

What a baby monitor is for and when to get one

Baby monitor transmits sound and video from your baby's room. The camera keeps an eye on the crib, and you have everything under control, either through a separate parent unit you carry around the house or via Wi-Fi directly to your smartphone. It makes sense from the very first day at home, when your baby sleeps somewhere other than beside you, but make sure to get one before giving birth. #vyzkousenozavas

It's not about anxiously staring at the monitor every second. It's about being able to run the dishwasher, take a shower and still know that everything is calm in the nursery. A baby monitor simply gives you a little peace of mind during the day, and that's often what matters most.

Just to be clear: A baby monitor is not a breathing monitor

People often confuse the two, so we want to mention it right at the start

  • A baby monitor transmits video and sound, so you can see and hear what's happening in the nursery.
  • A breathing monitor is a sensor, typically a pad placed under the mattress, that detects breathing movements and automatically sounds an alarm when necessary.

They are two different devices designed to do two different things.

We don't make breathing monitors (yet). If you want one, get it separately or choose a combined baby monitor with a breathing monitor from another brand. And one more thing that we also mention in our manuals: a baby monitor is a helpful aid for keeping an eye on your baby, but it does not replace adult supervision.

A baby monitor for your dog? It works for that too

You can get a baby monitor for your furry baby too, aka your dog, cat, or any other pet. Are you leaving your dog at home when it doesn’t cope well with being alone? Then what you’re really looking for is a camera for your dog at home, and a baby monitor can do the job. You can see whether it’s sleeping or has chosen revenge and is chewing through cables or your Birkenstocks. You can hear when it starts whining. And with two-way audio, you can talk to it without having to go home.

Here’s a tip from Niceboy: For keeping an eye on your dog, a Wi-Fi model with an app is a great choice. You can check in from work or while on holiday, without being limited by the range of the parent unit, which will take you at most to the end of the garden.

However: A baby monitor is designed for one room and a cot. If you mainly want a camera for your dog or to keep an eye on your entire home, choose a security camera. It offers a wider field of view, motion detection throughout the room, and you can set it up for a scenario where nothing happens all day.

Two types of baby monitors, two different kinds of peace of mind

The market divides baby monitors into two groups, and the main difference is how the signal is transmitted.

1) Baby monitor with a parent unit

The camera and the unit communicate directly with each other. No router, no app, no login. Turn it on, pair it, and you're good to go.

The advantage? Responsiveness. You hear sounds from the nursery practically instantly. If your internet goes down, the baby monitor doesn't care and the video keeps running. And because it isn't connected to the network, it can't be accessed over the internet.

The main limitation is range. Beyond the signal range, the unit goes silent and you don't know anything about your child, whether human or animal. You can't check in from work.

For whom: An apartment or house, and parents who want to keep an eye on things from the next room without having to deal with an app password.

2) Wi-Fi baby monitor via mobile

The camera connects to your home Wi-Fi and sends the image to your phone. Distance is no longer an issue - you can be at work, shopping or even on holiday and still see into the crib whenever you want.

The second bonus is sharing. You can install the app, and so can the other parent, grandma or even the babysitter. You don't have to pass around any extra device, as everyone receives the video and audio on their phone. Recordings can be saved to a microSD card or to the cloud.

There are two limitations: As soon as the internet or router goes down, the transmission goes down with it. And because the camera is connected to the network, it also requires some basic "hygiene": your own strong password that you don't use anywhere else and up-to-date firmware. A few minutes during installation means peace of mind for years.

Who it's for: parents who want to watch from outside the home, share access and have recordings.

What about hybrids?

There are models on the market that combine a parent unit with an app. We don't offer one, so we won't try to push it on you. If a hybrid is a must for you, look at another brand.

How to Choose a Baby Monitor: The Criteria That Matter

Range and Interference

In our experience, this is the most overrated figure on the box and also the most common reason for disappointment.

Manufacturers state two figures. For our models with a parent unit, that means up to 300 m in open space and up to 50 m indoors through walls. The second figure is the only one that matters to you in an apartment. When you see a baby monitor with a range of 1,000 m, bear in mind that this applies in an open field, not in your three-room apartment.

Why does the range drop indoors? The signal has to pass through walls while also making its way through everything else in your apartment that transmits on the same frequency. Niceboy Starlight baby monitors operate at 2.4 GHz, just like Wi-Fi, and that frequency is simply pretty crowded. These things weaken your signal the most:

  • reinforced concrete and metal structures in walls, the biggest signal killers
  • microwave ovens, which operate at the same frequency at full power
  • Wi-Fi routers and Bluetooth devices, yours and your neighbors'
  • televisions and radios in the immediate vicinity of the camera

That is why our manual tells you to keep the camera away from the television, microwave and radio, and not to place it between metal objects. If you live in an apartment with load-bearing walls, walk around it with the unit in your hand on the first evening and find where the signal drops. Doesn't it work? Return it under warranty.

With a Wi-Fi model, you don't need to worry about range. What matters is whether the router has a decent signal in the nursery. If not, get a Wi-Fi repeater and plug it in the hallway between the router and the nursery.

Microphone Sensitivity and VOX Settings

You don't need the baby monitor to tell you that your child is screaming - you can hear that through the door. You want to know when your child starts fidgeting, murmuring and is about to start crying their heart out two minutes later. This is exactly where the difference between a good and a bad baby monitor lies.

VOX mode means that the unit runs muted and the display lights up when the camera's microphone detects sound above the set level. When everything is quiet, it saves battery power. The key word is set. With both the Niceboy Starlight SL4 and Niceboy Starlight SL5, you can fine-tune the threshold according to how noisy your home is.

One honest caveat: No VOX will respond to a child who wakes up completely silently and simply sits up.

Image Quality and Night Vision

At night, the baby monitor is looking into the dark, so resolution alone isn't enough. You want infrared illumination that produces a clear black-and-white image without dazzling your child.

HD is enough to tell where your child is lying in the crib and whether they are awake. Full HD gives you room to zoom in, so you aren't looking at a pixelated image. You will notice the difference mainly when you zoom in on the image.

Two-way audio

The microphone and speaker built directly into the camera mean you can talk to your child remotely. They wake up, you talk to them, and that is often enough. You do not have to get up or open the door that, as if on purpose, chooses that exact moment to creak.

It sounds like a small thing, but after three weeks it may well be the feature you use most often of all.

Alerts: Crying, temperature, feeding

Three functions, one task: to alert you before you have time to look at the display. Think of them as a single decision-making criterion, not three extra bullet points in a catalogue.

  • Sound and crying detection sends you an alert even when the unit is muted.
  • Room thermometer (e.g. on the Niceboy ION Starlight SL5) can also set upper and lower limits. You set them, and the unit alerts you when the nursery exceeds them.
  • Feeding reminder helps maintain the routine the whole family has got used to.

Do not expect miracles from them. Sound detection is an aid, not supervision. When choosing between two otherwise identical models and one of them has these alerts, choose that one.

Pan-tilt camera and zoom

A static camera sees the cot, while a pan-tilt camera sees the whole room. That comes in handy when your child starts crawling and the cot stops being the only place where anything happens.

You can remotely turn the Niceboy Starlight SL5 and Niceboy Starlight SL3 cameras up to 355° sideways and tilt them by 90°. The Niceboy ION Starlight SL4 rotates along two axes and also includes digital zoom.

Power supply and battery

This is where an unpleasant surprise hides, one that parents usually discover only at home.

Usually, only the parent unit has a battery. The camera is typically mains-powered, and that applies to all three of our Starlight models. This means you cannot take it to the cot in the garden where there is no socket or put it next to the stroller under the trees. If you need that, look for battery-powered baby monitors where both units work without a cable. We do not have such a model.

Unit runtime is the second thing to consider. Niceboy Starlight SL4 lasts up to 20 hours, while the Niceboy Starlight SL5 lasts 20 to 36 hours depending on usage. You notice the difference when you charge one every night and the other every other day.

How many rooms can you monitor?

One parent unit works with one camera. If you want to monitor two children's rooms at the same time, a single-unit baby monitor will not solve it; you need a second set.

A Wi-Fi solution does not have this limitation. You add cameras to the app and switch between them on your phone. So if you are planning for a second child in another room or want to see the living room at the same time, take this into account when choosing.

Sleep mode and lullabies

You can play lullabies directly from the camera without having to go into the nursery. Niceboy Starlight SL5 has eight of them, so at least you will not get stuck listening to the same melody until the end of maternity leave. For some children, this works reliably and can form the basis of an entire evening routine. Another child will not even notice and will fall asleep only when you pick them up.

So do not choose a more expensive model because of the lullabies. Decide based on range, image quality and microphone sensitivity, and treat the melodies as a pleasant bonus.

8 common mistakes when buying

These are the mistakes we see most often.

  1. Buying based on the biggest number on the box. The range in an open space says nothing about how the baby monitor performs through two load-bearing walls.
  2. Not testing different places in your home. Walk through the entire home with the unit on the first evening. You’ll spot places where the camera signal drops out or gets noisy within a minute. After a month, it’s too late to exchange it.
  3. Positioning the camera incorrectly. Place it roughly two metres from the area you want to monitor. It doesn’t belong in the cot or on its edge, because the power cable must be kept out of the child’s reach. Ideally, run it along the wall and secure it.
  4. Underestimating microphone sensitivity. If the baby monitor only activates when your child is already hysterical, you’ll miss those few minutes when they’re just starting to stir. Check the VOX threshold on the first night and adjust it until it doesn’t wake you unnecessarily while still ensuring you don’t miss anything.
  5. Underestimating latency. A picture delayed by two seconds doesn’t matter during normal monitoring. You’ll notice it when you hear your child crying but the display is only just starting to show it. Test how quickly the unit responds when you clap in the nursery.
  6. Assuming the camera runs on batteries. Most cameras need a power outlet, including ours. Before you start planning to monitor your child by the pram in the garden or on holiday, check the specifications to see how the camera is powered.
  7. A Wi-Fi model without a proper password. For a camera connected to the internet, set your own strong password during installation, use it nowhere else, and leave updates enabled. The default password is the most common reason someone else can access the camera.
  8. Buying only after giving birth. Get your baby monitor in the final weeks of pregnancy and test it out calmly. Learning how to use it when you’ve just given birth and are sleep-deprived is an unnecessary test of your nerves.

Niceboy Starlight SL4

A classic choice for parents who want peace of mind without the internet. An HD camera with night vision, two-axis rotation, digital zoom, adjustable VOX mode, two-way audio, a thermometer, lullabies and a feeding reminder. The parent unit has a 3.5" display and lasts up to 20 hours.

Who it's for: a first child, an apartment or smaller house, and parents who don't want to connect anything to the network.

Limit: the display is smaller and the unit works with just one camera. You can't monitor two rooms with it.

Niceboy Starlight SL5

The same principle as the SL4, but with bigger numbers. The parent unit has a 5" LCD and lasts 20 to 36 hours. You can remotely rotate the camera by up to 355° and tilt it by 90°, with VOX, sound detection, two-way communication, eight lullabies and a thermometer with adjustable upper and lower limits.

Who it's for: anyone who wants a larger image on the unit and to charge it every other day rather than every night.

Limit: it doesn't have an app, so you can't check in from work. Once you're beyond its range, there's no signal, and you can't add a second camera to the unit.

Niceboy Starlight SL3

A Wi-Fi model without a parent unit, in other words, a baby monitor via your phone. The image goes straight to your phone through the Niceboy ION app, so distance isn't an issue. A Full HD camera with night vision, rotation of up to 355° and a 90° tilt, two-way communication, a thermometer, lullabies, and motion and sound detection. Recordings can be saved to a microSD card or the cloud, and an 8GB card holds approximately 19 hours of 1080p video. You can also invite the other parent or a grandparent to your app account.

Who it's for: parents who want to check in from work, share access with their partner and keep recordings. You can also use it to keep an eye on your dog while you're out during the day.

Limit: it only works as reliably as your network does. If the internet goes down or the router restarts, you won't be able to see anything. And because the camera is connected to the internet, the password and updates are your responsibility.

Niceboy tip: Don't always vacuum at maximum power. The most common mistake we see with stick vacuums? Turning on the highest power, vacuuming the entire time, and then having to run to the charger shortly afterward. For everyday dust, crumbs, and pet hair on the floor, a lower setting is all you need. With the Niceboy Hurricane H9, SMART mode takes care of this for you by automatically increasing the power where there's more dirt.

Save maximum power for what it's designed for: Long-pile carpets, ground-in sand, or a one-off deep clean. You'll notice the difference right away, because the battery lasts around 15 minutes at maximum power, but up to 50 minutes on a lower setting (depending on the model). Use full power only where you need it.

Still confused?

Let’s make it simpler. Want to keep an eye on things at home without relying on the internet? Choose Niceboy Starlight SL4, and if you need a larger display and longer battery life for the parent unit, go for Niceboy Starlight SL5.

Want to check in from work and share access with the other parent, or keep an eye on more rooms? Choose Niceboy Starlight SL3.

Whichever you choose, the main benefit stays the same. You’ll stop getting up all the time and start doing the things that used to be second nature before giving birth again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a baby monitor pick up quiet whimpering?

It depends on the microphone sensitivity and whether you can adjust the VOX mode threshold. With the Niceboy Starlight SL4 and SL5, you can set the level at which the monitor alerts you yourself. We recommend fine-tuning it on the very first night, not after a week of sleep deprivation.

Does a baby monitor work in a high-rise apartment?

It does, but expect a shorter range than stated on the box. Our models transmit at 2.4 GHz, and reinforced concrete walls, metal structures and even the microwave can weaken the signal. The stated range of up to 50 m indoors is enough to cover an average apartment. Try it throughout the entire apartment on the very first evening.

Is a baby monitor with a parent unit safer than Wi-Fi?

A baby monitor with a parent unit has the advantage of not depending on the internet, so the risk of remote access is eliminated. A Wi-Fi baby monitor is safe when you give it its own strong password and make sure it runs the latest firmware. The main difference is how much attention you give it at the start.

What range do I need for an apartment, and what about a house?

For an average apartment, a model with a range of up to 50 m indoors is more than enough, which the Niceboy Starlight SL4 and SL5 can handle. In a multi-storey house with a garden, keep in mind that the signal weakens more quickly through ceilings and load-bearing walls. If you want a baby monitor with a long range and reliable coverage even at the end of the garden, choose a Wi-Fi model.

Can I use a baby monitor while travelling or with a stroller in the garden?

Yes, while travelling. You can take a model with a parent unit to a holiday cottage or to your grandparents' house, and it works without Wi-Fi. With a stroller in the garden, you'll run into a problem: the camera on our models is mains-powered, so you cannot use it without a power outlet. For this scenario, you need a battery-powered baby monitor, with both units operating without cables.

Can I use a baby monitor to keep an eye on my dog?

Sure, you can. For this purpose, a Wi-Fi model will suit you better because you can check in from work too. If you mainly want a camera for your dog at home, consider choosing a security camera with a wider field of view instead.

From what age does it make sense to use a baby monitor?

From the first day your baby sleeps in a different room from you. For many families, that is as soon as they return home from the hospital. When you stop needing it depends on the child and the layout of your home, but most parents put it away sometime during the preschool years.

How many cameras can one parent unit handle?

One. You cannot add another camera to the Niceboy Starlight SL4 or SL5 parent unit, so you need a second set for another room. If you want to monitor multiple rooms from one place, choose the Niceboy Starlight SL3. It works through an app where you can add cameras to your account.
